Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Nice, France!
Nice, on the Côte d'Azur in the south of France and reigning as the so-called French Riviera capital, is renowned as a sunlit seaside haven with balmy climate enhancing architectural intrigue and a rich artistic heritage. Nice was founded by Greeks who called it "Nike" for victory. Artists and writers gravitating to Milan include Victor Hugo, George Sand, Chateaubriand and Mistral. Matisse, who died in 1954, spent latter years in Nice, and the Matisse Museum displays many of the great artist's works painted in this city where soft sunlight beams down nearly every day. The city's historic center has been associated with a family boasting of recorded history dating to before 1261. The restored 17th century structure has elaborate ornamentation, retaining many of its 18th-century plaster embellishments and panels. A circa 1738 pharmacy with original Delftware accessories is on the grounds. In the 19th century, upper crust Victorians flocked to Nice, which since then has taken on more of a middle-class identity. Far less expensive than Cannes, St. Tropez and other shoreline hotspots, Nice remains well-positioned for day-trips to the film festival site, Monte Carlo and other outposts dotting the Riviera. As for cuisine, restaurant menus are filled with Nicoise salad and seafood including bouillabaisse (fish stew), which is to Nice what barbecue is to Texas. The older part of Nice has several good dining establishments, and Nice hotels range from budget to luxurious.
